video installation, 2023
By recreating the VIP room of a gentleman's club, and choosing to strip away features like music, lights, and performers, d'lure leaves viewers with a distorted and selective version of how this environment looks and feels.
viewers are invited to sit on cracked and stained chairs sourced from a local club. when wearing the headphones, viewers hear hushed voices of two dancers making the time pass while in a private dance with a customer.
The looped video is heavily pixelated with only this poem in full view:
if i edit it enough, can you tell what it is?
if i edit it enough, can you tell who i am?
Took my camera to the club and couldn't click release
i know what will follow, theft of an experience
a gift to those too frightened to allow themselves to digest
if i edit it enough, will you enjoy it?
if i edit it enough, will you finally be for it?
i stand, with a hand on my ass and another against my tit
to edit this would be a clouted disservice
the installation operates as a a jape to those who believe they can gain true insight of what a club is like while standing in the inside of a gallery, when anonymity in these clubs are held sacred for all those involved.
"you can write history, but you cannot edit reality"
